Oh, My! Using "Obama talk!" Name calling comes when one has nothing worthwhile to say. Too Funny! It is the liberal mainstream media of which you complain! I forgot more about "Democracy" than you can remember. I'm married to a man who signed a blank check for 30 years to fight for the democracy of which you speak. "A "Veteran" -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of "up to, and including his life." --Jean |

OK, I can see a small need for that, but only if you really can't read whilst online for some reason. In the old order world of being charged by connection time I can see that people might want to read offline to save connection costs, but with connections charged by megabytes nowadays that isn't going to make any difference, or am I missing something? tim |

OK 8-) I like to sit back in an easy chair to read, which is a lot less comfortable with my laptop in my lap than with something more like a news magazine. Furthermore, I can read OFFline when I'm out of reach of my home network sitting out in the yard. Yes, this sounds odd, I know, but with reinforced concrete slab walls and a lot of dirt surrounding and covering most of the house, the network is only accessible indoors. -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist http://www.mosaictelecom.com/~erilarlo |

It's apparently for something I haven't wanted to use on the iPad. The iPad is also a whole library; I don't need flash to download an incredible assortment of totally free books I needn't make a 20-mile round trip to the library for. Eventually the gas savings ought to contribute a little to ameliorate the price 8-) And then there's travel, which brings us back on topic! -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist http://www.mosaictelecom.com/~erilarlo |

No, it doesn't KEEP the content offline because I've usually been doing something else, 8-) I'm still learning what the iPad can do. Back to travel again, more or less. I like to play with maps. I was in Passau at the end of April and was playing with iPad's map recently and followed the Donau from Passau all the way to the Black Sea to see what the landscape looked like. Yes, I can do that on my laptop, too, but this was just an idle game while I was relaxing and drinking coffee in my recliner. -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist http://www.mosaictelecom.com/~erilarlo |

Yes, it's not always possible to connect, you might be roaming abroad (which is still prohibitively expensive) or like me, have an ipod which can only connect to the internet by wifi. OK I can accept this, but I was just asking about erilar's needs and she said that she didn't need videos. And even if she did, if they require flash and the iPad doesn't do flash, it's not going to work whether she tries to view them in a browser or via an app. For clarity here, I'm trying to learn about apps. I trying to understand why people might need to download (and sometimes pay for) an app to do something that the native machine can already do. tim |

Erilar already mentioned the offline capacity, but I think you're misunderstanding that, or she's talking about something else. The BBC newsreader app downloads a lot of news items with limited pictures, so you can then read them offline. Useful if you're travelling and don't have a 3g connection, etc. On the ipod, I generally use apps for things the browser can't do.
